We have around 300 staff working across Brownlow Health, including practice staff as well as those working between all our sites as part of Brownlow Health Primary Care Network.
As well as providing core medical services, in which we strive for excellence, there are many other notable aspects to our services across Brownlow Health:
Cancer Support Team
Our Cancer Support Team offers prompt, personalised help for patients newly diagnosed with cancer. They support individuals in understanding their diagnosis, accessing the right services and navigating treatment pathways. The team provides a consistent point of contact throughout the cancer journey, offering guidance, information and emotional support.
Diabetes Specialists
Brownlow Health has two GPs with special interest in diabetes and a Diabetes Specialist Nurse. They provide annual reviews, medication reviews and personalised support for people living with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. The service works closely with community diabetes teams and secondary care specialists, with additional lifestyle and dietary support available through Health and Wellbeing Coaches and dietitian services.
Drug and Alcohol Support
We are actively involved in shared‑care drug services in Liverpool, supporting both direct patient care and service development across the city. Our work includes improving the management of drug dependency within primary care and collaborating with commissioners to enhance care for people with alcohol dependency. The team ensures structured, accessible and compassionate support for individuals who need it.
Eating Disorder Support
Our GPs with specialist interest in eating disorders provide sensitive, coordinated care and link patients with local specialist services. We work collaboratively to ensure timely support and ongoing management tailored to each individual.
Elderly Intermediate Care Centre and Nursing Homes
We provide ongoing medical care to the intermediate care centre and local nursing homes, focusing on continuity, early intervention and proactive reviews. Our approach supports safe transitions of care, maintains quality of life and ensures older adults receive compassionate, personalised support.
First Contact Physio
Our First Contact Physio service offers direct access to specialist assessment and treatment for musculoskeletal conditions without requiring a GP referral. Patients receive rapid advice, diagnosis and management plans designed to improve mobility, reduce pain and support recovery.
GP Registrar
As a training practice, we host GP registrars who work alongside our clinical teams to develop their skills and confidence in general practice. This supports high standards of training and strengthens the future GP workforce.
Health and Wellbeing Coaches
Our Health and Wellbeing Coaches help people improve their physical and mental health by focusing on what matters most to them. They support individuals in building the confidence, knowledge and skills required to manage their own health, prevent illness and maintain wellbeing. Coaching includes goal‑setting, personalised guidance and linking people with helpful resources and peer support.
Healthcare Support Worker Training
We offer training and development opportunities for healthcare support workers, helping them gain essential clinical skills and progress within primary care.
Homelessness Care
Our enhanced homelessness service supports individuals experiencing homelessness or living in hostels across Liverpool. The multidisciplinary team includes clinicians with specialist expertise, two homelessness nurses, an alcohol nurse and shared‑care drugs workers. We work in close partnership with local homelessness organisations to deliver coordinated support. The weekly Homeless Access Clinic runs every Thursday at Brownlow (12:30–2:30pm), while the usual walk‑in service is redirected to the Student Health Centre. We also provide outreach and hospital inreach to support safe discharge and continuity of care.
Home Assessment Team (H.A.T)
The Home Assessment Team consists of Advanced Nurse Practitioners, a Nurse Associate and an Occupational Therapist, supported by admin staff. They offer same‑day home visits for patients who are too unwell to attend the practice and carry out holistic assessments for people who are frail, elderly or have complex needs. Home visits allow clinicians to understand each patient’s clinical presentation, functional ability, social support and home environment. This enables tailored care planning, reduces unnecessary hospital admissions and promotes independence, wellbeing and continuity of care within the home.
Medical Student Training
We support medical students through supervised placements that offer real‑world experience in general practice. Students learn to deliver patient‑centred care as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Mental Health Practioners
Our Mental Health Practitioners include trained nurses and GPs who work closely with local psychology services to provide timely assessment and coordinated support. They help patients understand their options and access the most appropriate mental health care in a compassionate and structured way.
Obesity
GPs with a special interest in obesity support patients with personalised, evidence‑based care. We contribute to local service provision and connect individuals with dietetic, coaching and wellbeing services to help achieve sustainable lifestyle changes.
Research
Brownlow Health is part of the Mersey Primary Care Research Consortium and supports a wide range of clinical studies spanning lifestyle improvement, disease prevention, long‑term condition management and treatments for common illnesses. We were awarded the Royal College of General Practitioners’ Primary Care Research Team Assessment Award, recognising our excellence in research delivery. All studies are ethically approved, participation is voluntary and patients may withdraw at any time.
Refugee and Asylum Team
The Refugee and Asylum Team offers holistic, multidisciplinary care for patients seeking refuge or asylum in the UK. They work alongside city‑wide partners to ensure best‑practice, multi‑agency care that supports both health and broader wellbeing. The team aims to provide compassionate, coordinated support during a challenging period of transition.
Respiratory Specialists
The Respiratory Specialists provide expert support for asthma, COPD and other respiratory conditions. Care includes dedicated assessments, personalised treatment plans and home‑based support where needed to improve symptoms and overall respiratory wellbeing.
Sexual Health Services
We offer confidential sexual health services including STI testing and treatment, as well as the fitting and management of long‑acting reversible contraception. Care is inclusive, patient‑centred and designed to support informed decisions about sexual health and wellbeing.
Student Healthcare
We work closely with local universities and the wider student welfare network, including hall wardens, tutors, international student services, careers teams and university counselling. We also host a sports physiotherapy clinic and a psychology service for University of Liverpool students. Our student hubs include the Student Health Centre on the University of Liverpool campus and Brownlow Health @ Marybone, near Liverpool John Moores University buildings.
Student Nurse Training
We support student nurse training within the practice, providing placements and hands‑on learning opportunities that help develop the skills and confidence of the next generation of nurses.
Trans Healthcare
Our GPs with a special interest in trans healthcare provide respectful, inclusive and person‑centred support. We contribute to local enhanced services and ensure patients can access appropriate and affirming care throughout their healthcare journey.
Young Persons Health
In collaboration with the Young Persons Advisory Service (YPAS), we developed the GP Champs service, offering dedicated, approachable healthcare for young people across Liverpool. The service supports young people in a safe, understanding environment tailored to their needs.
